response to "Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction"

I thought Walter Benjarmin's article on Mechanical reproduction was, besides being very long, kind of interesting. I was paticularly caught by his claim that the mass production and subsequent availability of a work of art to the common man lowered the apriciation of the piece. I personally beleive that the mass reproduction of works of art sort of ingrains their presence into the imortal tombs of history, so to speak. I do not see this as a bad thing at all, even though i do agree that alot of respect for the actual piece is lost in the process.

Much of this article is spent on the nature of the public that views these mass produced art pieces. I can agree that the public is the eternal absent minded apriciaters.

The difficulty begins with establishing what appreciation is. Does appreciation require scholarship? Does it require the background knowledge of the work we are viewing in order to ground itself in place and time (and history); or, is it simply the enjoyment derived from viewing something?
